Chimi Lhakhang- the fertility temple in Punakha

Chimi Lhakhang is situated on the top of a hill in the centre of the valley. This temple is dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kuenley who was also known as the divine “Madman” for his dramatized teachings. This temple is also known as the fertility temple because it is believed that couples who do not have children are blessed with newborns after praying at this temple. On the trail along the road, there are rice fields and a small stream before the short climb to Chimi Lhakhang.

Best time to visit:

Every season has its own charm to visit Chimi Lhakhang but the rice harvesting season is considered the best time to visit Chimi Lhakhang when the valley is covered with the golden hue of ripped crops.

Entry Timing:

There is a specific timing for entering Chimi Lhakhang which is from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, all the seven days of the week. It is mandatory that before or after this timing the visitors not welcomed inside the premises of Lhakhang.

How to reach Chimi Lhakhang from Bagdogra?

From Bagdogra Airport you can drive to Chimi Lhakhang at a distance of 87 kilometers. The time limit taken will be approximately 10 hours 22 minutes.

The best possible way to reach Chimi Lhakhang is:

  • From Bagdogra Airport Road turn right onto NH27
  • Then turn right at Panchmukhi Air & Train Ambulance services Pvt Ltd
  • Continue straight Jha Tour and Travels while staying onto NH27
  • From Shiv Mandir More, continue onto NH10
  • Continue straight to NH10 then turn right onto NH17
  • Stay at NH17 and continue onto NH317
  • From NH317A turn right onto Indo-Bhutan Border Road
  • Then take the 3rd exit onto Phuentsholing-Thimphu Highway
  • Then turn left and right
  • Continuing on Phuentsholing-Thimphu highway turn straight onto Babesa-Thimphu expressway
  • Take the exit to Simtokha Lam
  • Continue straight and turn left to Bumthang-Ura Highway
  • After turning right Bumthang-Ura Highway it becomes Thimphu-Punakha Highway
  • Continue slightly left and you will reach Chimi Lhakhang

As it is a long and a tiring journey you can stop in the middle to have lunch or snacks and then again continue your journey to Chimi Lhakhang with the view of the beautiful sceneries on both sides.
